The Brentwood Unified School District's replacement of a Native American mascot with a Spartan has led to a lawsuit from parent William King Moss III. He claims the Spartan symbol perpetuates white supremacy and offends women and people of color. Moss argues this representation sends harmful messages to students, particularly his daughters. Despite his claims, local Greek community members defend the Spartan identity, highlighting a misinterpretation of historical context around Spartan culture. The disagreement exposes deeper educational and cultural conflicts within the district.
"This symbol sends the message that enslaving indigenous people and excluding women from the military are acceptable," said Moss, who has two girls enrolled in the district, to The Post.
"That person is ignorant. Sparta was more progressive than he knows," said a Greek pastor, who asked to remain anonymous, to The Post about Moss and Greece's history.
"Moss does have a longstanding beef against the Brentwood Unified School District and has previously raised concerns about other school policies, indicating this lawsuit may not be only about the mascot."
