On Monday, the James Beard Foundation crowned its 2024 award winners at a ceremony in Chicago. Despite having four Bay Area finalists in the running, not a single local chef or restaurant won any of the prestigious awards.
The greater Northern California region did not fare any better on Monday night. Buu "Billy" Ngo, the chef behind Sacramento Japanese restaurant Kru, was nominated for best chef California and Carmel-by-the-Sea's Chez Noir was nominated for best new restaurant, but neither took home the award.
A few Bay Area representatives did win in other James Beard award categories that were announced ahead of Monday's ceremony. On Sunday, Sonoma County farmer Mai Nguyen won a leadership award for sustainability, and San Francisco Burmese restaurant Mandalay won the America's Classics Award back in February.
