Tesco has launched a groundbreaking initiative to combat food waste by giving away food that is close to expiration at no cost after 9.30pm. This innovative 'yellow label' scheme, currently being trialed in select Express stores across the UK, aims to significantly cut their reported food waste of 35,000 tonnes per year. In addition to this new approach, Tesco continues to donate unsold food to charities. Staff will receive priority over reduced items before the offer extends to customers, ensuring food is redistributed responsibly alongside waste reduction strategies.
Tesco plans to give away food which is about to go out of date at absolutely no cost, with yellow-sticker items becoming completely free after 9.30pm.
This trial, in a small number of our Express stores, will allow customers to take any remaining yellow stickered items for free at the end of the day.
We are constantly looking for innovative new ways to reduce food waste, and this plan will allow Tesco to continue with our drive to reduce it.
The supermarket also plans to give away food which is about to expire, reinforcing its commitment to reducing 35,000 tonnes of food waste in the UK.
