Bagel shops in the San Francisco Bay Area are experiencing a surge in popularity, with Schlok's Bagels & Lox debuting a second location in downtown San Francisco in 2025. Co-owners Zack Schwab and James Lok emphasize their commitment to the area, citing a belief in revitalizing downtown. Conversely, Tyler Florence’s Union Square kiosks have closed after less than a year, highlighting challenges for new businesses. This trend reflects a broader dynamic where some food trends succeed while others fail, as seen in the ongoing growth of bagel shops amidst shifting business climates.
Schwab, whose new shop will take over the ground floor of the Robert Dollar Building, says it's time to pour into the area. "We believe in San Francisco, and we believe in downtown," Schwab told the paper.
Unlike the first shop, this second space will play host to about 20 seats rather than just takeout. The bagel trend in San Francisco really is a reliable provider for new and more hit makers.
