Popular Bay Area restaurant shutters all locations amid child labor violations

In late December, the Department of Labor announced that C Casa had employed staff as young as 14 who worked at the Napa restaurant 'outside permitted hours during school days.' Underaged staffers also allegedly handled hazardous equipment. Less than two weeks later, C Casa, which is owned by Catherine Bergen, announced it was closing for good. C Casa has also closed its locations inside Public Market Emeryville and at Bishop Ranch in San Ramon.
C CASA has been a fixture in the Oxbow Public Market since 2010, and we are very sorry to see them go,” Oxbow Public Market property manager Gabe Carlin said. Following the Department of Labor investigations, C Casa was fined $45,570 in child labor violations, alongside allegations of harassing a nursing employee by reducing her work schedule.
‘Any employer that refuses to accommodate nursing mothers, disregards the educational opportunities and safety of young workers, and harasses and retaliates against workers exercising their rights will be held accountable for their inexcusable actions,’ said Donald Hines, wage and hour division assistant district director. C Casa’s practices endangered children and raised significant concerns.
