According to CNBC, the retailer is planning on unveiling its first all-digital store in Texas by mid-October, meaning that customers can purchase items without having to wait in line. By using the company's Scan & Go app, they'll be able to ring up items while they shop and pay for them on their phones, making for a more streamlined retail experience.
Customers are 'overjoyed with the service,' a sales associate at the Sam's Club location in Concord told SFGATE over the phone, adding that it's now the 'only way they shop.' Though the app was introduced in 2016 as a stand-alone product, it was integrated into the Sam's Club app two years later and has since been downloaded at least 9.6 million times.
Though it's unclear whether any all-digital locations are slated to open in California, Walmart press representative Steven Zapata told SFGATE that they 'expect a handful of additional clubs to open next year' and that they have a 'healthy pipeline to build more.' Ultimately, this new development signals the company's broader push to dethrone Costco as the most lucrative warehouse retailer in the U.S.
