The Day Eagle Hope Project effectively utilizes federal funding to deliver essential food supplies to families in need on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation in Montana. A significant $200,000 grant from a USDA program has enabled the nonprofit to improve the quality and quantity of food distributed. Recent cuts by the USDA, which eliminated over $1 billion from crucial food assistance programs, have severely impacted food banks and schools as they grapple with heightened food insecurity. Initially funded through the American Rescue Plan, these programs fostered connections between local agriculture and food distribution networks.
The $200,000 from a U.S. Department of Agriculture local food buying program drastically raised both the quantity and quality of the food it could distribute.
Created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Local Food Purchase Assistance and the Local Food for Schools programs aimed to build more resilient supply chains of domestic food.
