A south London crime ring has been successfully convicted for attempting to sell nearly two tonnes of animal waste to unsuspecting shoppers, including whole chickens and processed sheep's heads. Southwark Council's food safety team launched an investigation in early 2020 after receiving reports of suspicious activities. Despite challenges, they accessed a premises in September 2020, discovering a filthy operation illegally cutting and packaging tainted poultry intended for human consumption, rather than disposal. Several individuals have been identified, with some having previously linked ties to food suppliers that categorize their products as unsuitable for human fare.
The operation revealed that nearly two tonnes of animal by-products, initially meant for disposal, were being illegally marketed as human food, putting public health at risk.
