While Bourdain might have put Sam's burgers on the map nationally when he dined there for an episode of 'The Layover,' to San Franciscans, Mike was the main attraction.
He had this natural ability to make people feel welcome, to feel at home. Sam's gets pretty unruly, but even when the place would be full, my dad would just run that tiny grill, and he'd deal with it, all while smiling and having a grace and elegance about him.
