Mazra, a restaurant celebrated for its Middle Eastern cuisine, is expanding to San Francisco with a new shawarma stand named Dawar 7, located in a Mission District gas station. The announcement coincided with the James Beard Awards naming co-owners Jordan and Saif Makableh semifinalists for the Best Chef: California award. Dawar 7 is envisioned as a small venture, reminiscent of the shawarma stands in Jordan, and aims to introduce Mazra's flavors to a larger audience in SF despite logistical challenges. Mazra's growth followed significant recognition, including being among Yelp's Top 100 Places to Eat.
Saif Makableh noted that opening an eatery in a gas station made him nostalgic for the shawarma stands in Jordan, bringing familiarity and comfort.
The expansion into San Francisco highlights that while it's challenging to establish a full Mazra location due to space needs, Dawar 7 offers a perfect introduction.
