Members of the California Assembly are set to discuss two bills that would restrict the participation of transgender athletes in school sports. Sponsored by Assembly members Kate Sanchez and Bill Essayli, these bills aim to ban trans girls from competing in women's sports and to dismantle existing laws protecting the rights of transgender students in athletics. This legislative move follows Governor Gavin Newsom's recent controversial remarks, expressing support for restricting trans participation, marking a significant shift in California's political climate surrounding LGBTQ rights.
"I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness. It's deeply unfair," Newsom said, citing his two school-aged daughters and his experience as a college athlete."
"Republicans have successfully weaponized increasing opposition to trans participation in sports into a winning strategy in the 2024 election," Newsom noted on his podcast, showcasing a shift in the political landscape.
