TV host Lorraine Kelly was deeply moved when author Paris Lees expressed gratitude for her consistent support of the transgender community during an interview. Lees, whose memoir "What It Feels Like for a Girl" was turned into a BBC Three series, highlighted the ongoing hostility faced by trans individuals and praised Kelly for using her platform to advocate for them. Kelly has previously emphasized the need for understanding and acceptance of trans people, sharing her commitment to representing their complexity beyond societal labels. This moment underscored the importance of allyship in the current social climate.
After Kelly replied, "You're going to make me cry," Lees continued, "Honestly, not everyone is there speaking up for us. We're less than 0.5 percent of the population and we are under attack."
In March, speaking to the Metro about the 80s HIV/Aids crisis, when the LGBTQ+ community was demonised, Kelly said, "I felt it was my duty to stand up and say, 'No, this isn't right'.”
Kelly has often voiced her backing the trans community, stating, "I don't like when trans people have to try [to] justify their experience, no one else has to."
