Darren Wood, 43, from Carshalton in south London, finished 1,000 parkruns at Morden on Saturday, becoming the first person worldwide to reach the milestone. Fellow Sutton Runners gave him a guard of honour as he approached the finish line with friends and family present. He received a yellow 1,000 parkrun T-shirt, a cape, and a crown and was dubbed “the king of parkrun.” Wood began parkrun in October 2004 and has taken part regularly since. He linked his participation to feeling normal, being less judged, and being able to talk about his mental health amid debts and a marriage breakup. He is 36 parkruns ahead of his closest rival and described the attention as overwhelming but a “nice celebration.”
"He was given a guard of honour from his fellow Sutton Runners as he approached the final finish line on Saturday at Morden in south London, surrounded by friends and family."
"“I wasn't judged any more, I could just be me and I could talk to people and explain how I was feeling.”"
