Bob Becker, 80, completed the Badwater ultramarathon, becoming the oldest official finisher. He trained rigorously for this challenge in Death Valley, where temperatures reached 118 degrees Fahrenheit. Becker, who has run ultramarathons for two decades, previously attempted this race at age 77 but finished just over the time limit. Determined to achieve his goal, he utilized his experience from earlier races to prepare. Becker expressed gratitude for the support he received during the race, celebrating the achievement as a personal adventure and a resolution of unfinished business.
Becker stated, "I just figure if somebody else can do a particular thing, there's probably not a whole lot of reason why I can't do it myself."
After 45 hours of running, Becker officially completed the 135-mile Badwater ultramarathon, becoming the oldest official finisher in history.
Becker acknowledged that he had unfinished business after failing to finish the race three years ago, saying, "I had unfinished business."
Talking about his preparation, Becker mentioned, "I thought, You know what? I think I'm going to throw my hat in the ring and see if I can qualify."
