"We will not tolerate some people bending their backs for others who just don't feel like coming to work. There is no room in this factory for people who don't get out of bed in the morning," said André Thierig, manufacturing director at Tesla's Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg.
Thierig claimed that checking up on sick workers at home was common practice and that they were appealing to "the employees' work ethic," which was met with backlash from employees.
Sick leave at Tesla's Berlin factory reached 17 percent this summer, well above the 5.2 percent German industry average, leading management to scrutinize employees' absences.
The IG Metall union expressed dismay regarding Tesla's treatment of its workers, noting concerns over the atmosphere created by management in the factory.
