Workers at Pastis, St. Anselm, and Le Diplomate, three prominent restaurants owned by Stephen Starr in D.C., rallied to voice allegations of unjust working conditions. They reported hostile work environments, failing accommodations for pregnant women, and a lack of communication about rights under the Paid Family Leave Law. The hospitality workers' union, Unite Here Local 25, has filed complaints with the National Labor Relations Board for labor law violations. Workers aim to unionize, with elections scheduled for St. Anselm and Pastis later this month, affecting around 400 employees collectively across the three establishments.
"When I told management that I needed time off to have my baby ... management did not explain to me the rights I had in this city as a new mother," explained St. Anselm pastry cook Maria Delgado.
The hospitality workers' union has previously filed complaints with the National Labor Relations Board over alleged labor law violations in two of the Starr restaurants.
Workers are bringing attention to the fact that they were not informed about their rights under the District's Paid Family Leave Law, especially Spanish-speaking pregnant employees.
Collectively, the three restaurants employ around 400 people, and workers at St. Anselm and Pastis have upcoming union election dates.
