In-office work at highest level since 2020, as companies pull back on remote
Briefly

With the easing of pandemic restrictions, office occupancy rates are rising, hitting 54.2% in major U.S. cities as of late January. Employees in D.C. and other cities are returning to their offices, with some employers pushing for a full return due to mandates. Notable companies stressing the importance of in-person work for collaboration and productivity include Gap, JPMorgan, AT&T, and Amazon. The uptick suggests a slow but steady return to a more traditional office environment as federal workers and others follow suit under new directives.
The rise in people working from the office is expected to continue to climb slowly, commercial property experts said, even as some employers continue to offer flexible work arrangements.
As more people come back, it makes it easier for other companies to ask their people to come back, said Mark Ein, chairman of Kastle.
