Sick leave in the U.S. increased 55% in 2023 compared to 2019, with employees younger than 36 leading the charge with a 29% leap, showing a shift in workplace norms.
Jamie Lynch, a manager, states: "When I was just out of high school, I was scared to death to call in sick. But now that's just not the way of the world."
Lynch notes, "We really have to take care of ourselves and fill our own cup. Gen Zs were just the first ones who didn't have the fear to call in sick."
Experts suggest Gen Z's pioneering of workplace trends like taking sick days reflects both their developmental stage and the unique social and technological environment they grew up in.
