The Arizona Senate has approved Senate Bill 1237, which mandates that full-time government employees work at their agency's office during scheduled hours, allowing remote work only under specific circumstances, such as illness. This legislation, which will now go to the House, is grounded in concerns over resource management and productivity, as many state agencies have employees teleworking since the pandemic. Advocates argue that in-person collaboration increases accountability and efficiency, pushing back on the trend of remote work after COVID-19.
"Allowing government employees to telework while cubicles and offices sit empty is a waste of public resources," Bolick said.
"The pandemic is over, and in-person collaboration between employees is key to a better work product," state representative Bolick stated.
Senate President Petersen emphasized that accountability for full-time government employees can only be achieved through in-person interactions.
Petersen noted that in-person work enables agency leaders to better manage state resources for the benefit of taxpayers.
