4 Reasons 'Coffee Badging' Is Making A Comeback In 2026
"A Resurgence Of The Coffee Badging Trend Coffee badging is on the rise, according to the recent Monster's 2025 Coffee Badging survey, and it's not surprising that Gen Z is leading the charge. This emerging hybrid-work workaround reflects rising tensions between flexibility and in-office expectations, revealing that one in eight employees are trying coffee badging. And nearly half (46%) of U.S. workers say Gen Z is the generation most likely to engage in the trend. The report offers four reasons for the re-emergence"
"1. Protest As companies continue to call back employees to the office, many are subtly protesting by complying for as little time as possible. The 2023 Owl Labs State of Hybrid Work Report found that 69% of employees believe their employers are requiring them to work from the office because of traditional work expectations, especially when 60% of hybrid workers insist they're more productive when they work from home (30% say they are at the same level of productivity working from home)."
Coffee badging is increasing, with about one in eight employees attempting the practice and 46% of U.S. workers identifying Gen Z as most likely to engage. The trend reflects tensions between demands for in-office attendance and desires for remote flexibility. Many workers comply with on-site mandates only briefly as a form of protest while preserving their preferred work environment. Survey data show 69% of employees view return-to-office requirements as driven by traditional expectations, while 60% of hybrid workers report being more productive at home and 44% say flexibility improves work-life balance.
