Our findings indicate that individuals of lower socioeconomic status and women are more likely to view romantic love as a critical factor for commitment, highlighting its evolutionary role.
Interestingly, participants from countries with a higher Human Development Index assigned greater importance to romantic love, suggesting varying perceptions of love across different societal contexts.
This research underscores how love can be understood as an adaptive mechanism that enhances reproductive success through fostering strong commitments, particularly in vulnerable demographics.
By analyzing responses from over 86,000 people spanning 90 countries, we offer substantial evidence supporting the theory of love as a commitment device shaped by socio-economic realities.
