I Want to Be Single Forever
"If you're a single man in America right now, it's likely your dreams include being in love with your wife, maybe having a precocious child, and securing a financial future for yourself and your family. This is a common dream and a lovely one. The opposite would be to imagine a future in which you're uncoupled, rich in deep friendships, free to do what you'd like, and wealthy."
"Are my current friendships getting my best energy right now? Who do I want to be closer to in my life? Conduct an audit of your social circle and dedicate an hour weekly (at minimum) to friend/family activities over the next four weeks. What are all the parts of your dream you've already achieved or are on the path to achieving? Many of our life dreams can be achieved solo, and a romantic relationship is one part of a bigger picture."
Remaining single is a viable option and may be necessary for some people. Many women choose intentional singlehood, and an increasing number of men may also follow this path. A paradoxical intervention in psychotherapy can help shift perspective when change is difficult. Single men can pursue dreams that include deep friendships, freedom, and financial security. Three reflective questions can guide priorities: audit friendships, identify achieved dream components, and assess past romantic experiences. Long-term relationships require significant investment and are not guaranteed for many men in coming decades.
