One daily habit could save you from chronic back pain
"Daily walking - even at a leisurely pace - significantly lowers the risk of chronic back pain. The study confirms that volume of walking is more important than intensity. The findings could save the healthcare system significant amounts of money while also alleviating many people's back pain - if we just follow the simple advice provided."
""People who walk more than 100 minutes every day have a 23 per cent lower risk of lower back problems than those who walk 78 minutes or less," said Rayane Haddadj. He is a PhD candidate at the Department of Public Health and Nursing at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and is part of a research group that specifically studies musculoskeletal disorders. The results of the new study were published in the JAMA Network Open journal."
A large study of over 11,000 people found that greater daily walking volume is associated with lower risk of chronic lower back problems. Walking more than 100 minutes each day corresponds to roughly a 23% lower risk compared with walking 78 minutes or less. Protective effects occur even with low-intensity, leisurely walking, indicating that total time spent walking matters more than walking speed. Increased daily walking could reduce the burden of chronic lower back pain and potentially lower related healthcare costs. Findings emphasize promoting cumulative walking time as a preventive measure for back health.
