The Unrecognized Strengths of Depression
Briefly

Despite the overwhelming prevalence of depression in America, many discussions—especially on platforms like TikTok and YouTube—focus solely on the negative aspects, with little recognition of personal growth or strengths.
Our research revealed that while many videos accurately identified clinical symptoms of depression, a mere 15% referenced any positive experiences, potentially harmful in shaping public perception of mental health.
The classic portrayals of depression often serve to reinforce stigma rather than provide a nuanced understanding, failing to acknowledge that individuals can find meaning and resilience even amidst their struggles.
Through my own experiences as both a clinician and someone with lived depression, I learned that while depression can be debilitating, it can also encourage a deeper understanding of oneself and foster empathy toward others in pain.
