Julie Sweeney, a 53-year-old from Cheshire, was sentenced to 15 months in jail after posting on Facebook that mosques should be blown up, including the adults inside them.
The court heard that Sweeney's comment arose during a time of community unrest after a stabbing incident in Southport, reflecting heightened tensions surrounding immigration and community relations.
Cheshire police reiterated their commitment to tackling hate speech, stating, 'There is nowhere to hide. If you choose to engage in this behaviour, we will find you and hold you responsible.'
Defense attorney John Keane argued that Sweeney, who has led a quiet life and is the primary caregiver for her husband, made a single, impulsive comment on social media.
