Teenagers at more risk online than Interrailing in Europe, say experts
Briefly

Simon Bailey, a child safeguarding consultant, emphasized the higher risks children face online compared to simple travel: 'The risk is far greater with a child up in their bedroom with access to a smart device than it is travelling to Berlin, Munich and seeing some of the wonderful sights that Europe provides.' He highlighted the dangers of the online world, where children often cannot identify threats.
Bailey noted that in today's digital landscape, 'there is a greater risk to children now in the online space than there ever has been before.' He stresses the importance of awareness in managing these risks, suggesting that parents need to focus more on online safety for their children.
Referencing research by Childlight, Bailey stated, 'more than 300 million children around the world face sexual exploitation and abuse online each year.' He warned that these statistics should be alarming for parents, urging them to take online safety seriously.
Bailey pointed out the difference between physical and online threats: 'most of the time in the physical world, a 15-, 16-year-old is going to recognize if somebody poses [a threat] but that in the online world, they just don't know who they are talking to.' This highlights the need for parental vigilance regarding children's online interactions.
