South Korean lawmakers have enacted a new law prohibiting the possession and viewing of deepfake porn, with violators facing up to three years in prison or hefty fines.
The legislation aims to combat the rising issue of non-consensual deepfake pornography, particularly targeting South Korean stars who have become primary victims, comprising 53% of deepfake content.
Last month, a significant network of deepfake porn chatrooms was uncovered, which had been circulating explicit content targeting students and educators, prompting calls for stricter regulations.
Authorities have established a crackdown on deepfake pornography platforms, including Telegram, where numerous deepfake videos were discovered, emphasizing the need for consumer accountability in the spread of such material.
