Santa Clara County to allow Tasers in jails with limits - San Jose Spotlight
Briefly

"One of the things you'll hear this afternoon is that these Tasers can be deadly in their use. I'm not going to ask you to ignore that, nor am I going to ask you to ignore the fact the incidents we're talking about preventing are deadly in and of themselves, and we don't have tools sufficient enough to stop those attacks from occurring," Jonsen told supervisors. He stressed the growing concern over the increasing violence in jails and the urgent need for adequate law enforcement tools to protect both inmates and deputies. The proposal for Tasers reflects an effort to address these escalating incidents while also navigating the complexities of mental health within the inmate population."
"The board did not have the four votes necessary to fund the weapon through forfeited assets, leaving open the possibility that county officials will pay $445,000 for the weapons with taxpayer dollars. The decision to fund the Tasers has sparked ongoing debate about budget priorities and the moral implications of investing in law enforcement tools versus mental health resources, especially in the context of a jail system housing a significant number of individuals with mental illnesses and insufficient treatment options."
