Danielle Hazel, a 25-year-old mother, has filed a discrimination complaint against the Miss America and Miss World pageants, arguing that barring mothers from participation is unfair and discriminatory. Hazel states, "Being pregnant or being a parent is not a crime," highlighting the need for inclusivity in such competitions.
Gloria Allred emphasizes, "There is no ban on mothers," according to Miss America’s legal representative. However, she contests this interpretation, insisting that the policies exclude mothers outright, creating a barrier for those wishing to participate.
Stuart Moskovitz, a lawyer for Miss America, argues that their rules protect child welfare, stating, "If you have a legal dependent, you have to take care of the legal dependent." He believes competing poses a risk to children of participants.
In her complaint, Hazel reveals her emotional struggle, sharing how her ambition since childhood to compete in a major pageant was shattered by the realization that motherhood disqualified her from participation.
