AT&T has agreed to a $13 million payout to 8.9 million customers impacted by a data breach from January last year, resulting from a third-party vendor compromise.
The FCC stated that AT&T's exposed data, which included account-related information and billing details, should have been deleted in 2017 or 2018, highlighting inadequate data management.
FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel remarked, "The Communications Act makes clear that carriers have a duty to protect the privacy and security of consumer data," emphasizing the heightened responsibility for data protection.
As part of the settlement, AT&T signed a Consent Decree to strengthen its data governance practices, underlining the legal expectation for telecom companies to safeguard consumer information.
