In Petaluma, local businesses react to President Trump's impending trade tariffs, with mixed outcomes observed. Companies like Van Bebber Brothers, which source steel domestically, face immediate price hikes of 20-25% due to tariff-induced inflation. Owner Royce Van Bebber highlights the challenge of absorbing increased costs for their customers. Conversely, businesses like California Sofa, with in-house manufacturing, are better positioned to maintain competitive pricing and delivery, as described by owner Chris Michna, who regards the tariff situation as a chance to promote domestic goods.
"Things are definitely changing day by day," said Royce Van Bebber, emphasizing how the tariffs are impacting business dynamics immediately.
"Domestically prices have gone up 20% to 25% already, why? Well unfortunately, the big steel mills, when they see tariffs, it gives them a green light to raise prices," stated Van Bebber.
"We are virtually integrated, I have my own factory in LA," said Chris Michna, highlighting a strategy that positions him favorably against tariff impacts.
"It's made in the U.S. It's less of a political issue, more patriotic to be honest," Michna added regarding competitive pricing in the wake of tariffs.
