Paris votes in favour of more 'garden streets' and pedestrianised areas
Briefly

In a recent referendum, the majority of Parisians voted in support of creating 500 new 'garden streets' aimed at enhancing green spaces and pedestrian accessibility throughout the city. Despite 66% approval, turnout was a mere 4%, reflecting lower engagement than previous votes on related green initiatives. This vote is part of Mayor Anne Hidalgo's ongoing strategy to increase urban greenery and public space accessibility. The new 'rues-jardin' will contribute to the existing 300 similar streets established since 2020, with consultations to begin in April regarding the eligible lanes for this initiative.
"This vote confirms our determination to continue opening up the public space to pedestrians and to make Paris an ever greener city," Christophe Najdovski, deputy mayor of Paris in charge of green spaces, told AFP.
Turnout, however, was at just four percent, the lowest yet in the series of local votes that mayor Anne Hidalgo has called in order to gain legitimacy for her green policies.
