A Guided Tour of Printemps, New York's Latest Shopping Hotspot
Briefly

The recent opening of Printemps New York marks a vibrant addition to the Financial District, featuring a blend of architectural styles across two buildings. Laura Gonzalez, tasked by Printemps CEO Jean-Marc Ballaiche to design the flagship store, strived for originality while drawing inspiration from the historic flagship in Paris. Gonzalez's design integrates floral motifs and Art Nouveau styles, creating a fresh, engaging shopping environment that respects the legacy of 'Printemps' while appealing to contemporary sensibilities. Her work emphasizes sustainability through the use of recycled materials and aims to create a unique visual and sensory experience for shoppers.
We didn't want to make a replica or pastiche of what had been done in Paris 160 years ago. It's both a blessing and a curse to have something so classic as a jumping-off point.
Floral allusions now bud and blossom across the department store's two levels, though there's nothing garden-variety about Gonzalez's interventions.
Our idea here was to do our own forest; its rippling outline guiding shoppers to the neighboring bar.
Gonzalez's design features graphic tiles and carpeting that riff on Art Nouveau motifs, emphasizing a connection to Printemps's Parisian heritage.
