Instituto Terra was founded by renowned photographer Sebastiao Salgado and his wife Lelia Dluiz Wanick as an initiative to restore the environment in the Rio Doce Basin. Since its inception in 1998, the organization has made significant strides in ecological restoration by planting more than 2.7 million trees, thereby transforming deforested areas into thriving ecosystems and directly contributing to the restoration of 550 acres of forest and over 2,000 natural springs.
The organization’s current focus includes enlisting the support of local farmers as vital partners in their efforts to restore the land and waterways within the Rio Doce Basin. This collaborative approach not only aims to enhance the restoration process but also empowers farmers to engage in sustainable practices, promoting biodiversity and improving their livelihoods.
