"The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to declare a nocturnal insect called the Bethany Beach firefly as threatened, arguing climate change, light pollution, coastal development and other threats are conspiring to degrade its delicate habitat and drive it closer to extinction."
"A lot of us grew up trying to capture them in the summer. It's an iconic animal. It brings a nostalgia to people," Fish and Wildlife biologist Julie Slacum said.
"Though it is hotly debated among insect scientists, this potential 'bugpocalypse' is poised to endanger birds and other animals that eat insects as well as farmers who rely on pollinators to grow crops."
"Discovered in 1949, the Bethany Beach firefly is distinct from other fireflies for its telltale black head marking and its double flash of green light."
