NASA chose SpaceX for a spacecraft to deorbit the ISS in 2030, extolled to cost up to $843 million. The new craft, U.S. Deorbit Vehicle, will be distinct from Dragon capsule.
Both the U.S. Deorbit Vehicle and ISS will destructively break up upon reentry. NASA will own and operate the deorbit craft, tasked with ensuring safe station reentry away from populated areas.
Russian Progress spacecraft was considered for deorbit mission, but a new vehicle was concluded necessary. Responsibility for the ISS safe disposal is shared among five space agencies, including NASA and Roscosmos.
