The Sahara Desert is experiencing a remarkable transformation as heavy rainfall leads to unprecedented plant growth, altering the landscape that is typically dry and barren.
Pockets of vegetation are emerging across Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya after an extratropical cyclone drenched the region on Sept. 7 and 8.
"When you get these really exceptional rainfall events, the dunes become these just incredibly verdant and flowered fields where the plants will just instantly grow for a short period of time to take advantage of," said Peter de Menocal.
The Sahara was once a lush environment with vegetation and lakes, showing that under the right conditions, desert landscapes can transform into green oases.
