The clothing, a limited-edition run of Outerknown's popular Blanket Shirt, is the first commercially available item made from a blend of cotton and Kelsun, a kelp-based fiber.
Seaweed is a more sustainable raw material than fossil fuels for synthetic fabric or even natural fibers like cotton. It doesn't need to be watered or fertilized.
Cotton requires around 2,600 gallons of water for a single pair of jeans, while seaweed avoids these challenges and captures CO2, making it a better choice.
Our brand was founded by surfers, and when we learned about Keel Labs' work with seaweed fibers, it immediately resonated with us.
