'You just leave your body like that,' he said, highlighting the severe impact on daily life for residents without air conditioning.
Muctar Koroma noted that even with his air conditioner, the heat was just too intense this year. 'It couldn't contain the heat in the room,' he remarked, pointing out the growing difficulty for families to manage extreme weather.
Eugenia Kargbo, the city's chief heat officer, explained that urban expansion has led to significant deforestation, exacerbating the heat problem. She stated, 'The trend analysis that we did recently shows that temperature is rising,' emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Residents of Freetown are feeling the effects of overcrowding and urbanization, with space for children to play disappearing. A local said, 'When I was 15, 16, we had enough space to even play football but presently...the area has been crossed out with houses.'
