Seawater flowing underneath and into gaps in the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica is contributing to the melting of the massive ice formation, a potentially ominous sign of the coming effects of human-driven climate change from the world's widest glacier.
Thwaites, known as the 'Doomsday Glacier', is losing about 50 billion tons of ice annually, accounting for roughly 4% of all global sea-level rise.
Research shows Thwaites melting could lead to a surge of more than two feet in average global sea levels, with even more significant impacts in some U.S. regions.
