NASA is monitoring the asteroid 2024 VK3, estimated at 28 to 62 feet wide, expected to pass within 273,000 miles of Earth at a speed of 29,300 mph.
All five asteroids flying by Earth this weekend are classified as Near Earth Objects (NEOs), with the closest, 2024 VK3, coming within a distance slightly farther than the moon.
NASA employs various methods, such as the Near-Earth Object Surveyor, an infrared space telescope, to survey and detect NEOs and Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs).
NASA has observed around 36,000 NEOs, mainly to identify those that might collide with Earth and assess their potential threats based on their trajectories.
