More than 1,300 tiny snails reintroduced to remote Atlantic island

The Desertas land snails were believed extinct for over a century, but conservation efforts identified surviving populations, leading to a successful breeding program.

Among the huge responsibilities taken on by conservationists was understanding the snails’ needs, as they were the first of their kind in human care.

The snails were released on Bugio, an island free from invasive species since 1990, ensuring a safe habitat for their survival.

Chester Zoo's team demonstrated great dedication, spending countless hours ensuring the wellbeing of the snails, which led to a successful breeding program.
