How important is the ozone layer? DW 09/16/2024
Briefly

The Montreal Protocol, finalized in 1987, represents a watershed moment in environmental governance, successfully phasing out 99% of ozone-depleting substances and showing effective global cooperation.
While CFCs caused severe damage to the ozone layer, their ban under the Montreal Protocol has led to a slow but hopeful recovery, particularly around the South Pole.
Although we’re witnessing some recovery of the ozone layer, contradictions remain as new holes still appear, highlighting ongoing challenges in fully addressing atmospheric health.
The ozone layer acts as Earth’s sunscreen, essential for protecting living organisms from harmful UV radiation that causes serious health and ecological issues.
