A study by the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research revealed that nearly half of the 370 hedgehogs examined died after being injured by robot mowers' blades. Hedgehogs, which forage at night, are particularly vulnerable as they do not flee from threats, relying instead on their spines, which offer inadequate protection against the sharp metal of robotic mowers. This raises significant concerns about their safety as these machines operate quietly at night.
Corinna Holzel from BUND stated, 'A ban on nighttime mowing is the minimum required. It would be even better to do without robot mowers completely.' She pointed out that these mowers do not discriminate while operating, cutting down everything in their path, which includes vital food sources for various species, threatening overall biodiversity and the survival of other small animals, plants, and insects.
