Wildlife photographers Vishal Subramanyan, along with UC Berkeley student scientists, captured the first-ever photographs of the elusive Mount Lyell shrew in October. These shrews had never been photographed alive before, making them the only known mammal in California to have eluded human cameras. With careful planning, the team set more than 100 pitfalls in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains, capturing six live shrews within hours. Their work highlights both the shrew's elusive nature and the importance of documenting lesser-known species.
"We caught a Mount Lyell shrew within like the first two hours and I think the fact that we ended up catching six of them, ... shows it's generally an underapp..."
"I'm always down for a crazy adventure. So I said, sure, why not? We should give this a try," Subramanyan told CNN Monday.
