Last week, an avid birder was struck by a southern water bird known as the anhinga or 'snake bird,' perched on a log in a flooded meadow. Maine Audubon staff naturalist Doug Hitchcox confirmed it as the first anhinga recorded in Maine, with distinctive features compared to the cormorant.
Hitchcox canceled his afternoon meetings to locate the bird, taking photos and guiding bird enthusiasts to spot the rare anhinga. He mentioned the bird's gradual range expansion northwards due to factors like climate change.
