Annual report card shows decline in clarity for Lake Tahoe
Briefly

Throughout the year, a research vessel takes scientists out onto the lake, where they release a 10-inch white Secchi disk into the depths of Tahoe. They record the measurement when the disk is no longer visible to the eye, and that's how scientists have tracked Tahoe's clarity year in and year out for decades.
In 2023, Lake Tahoe's overall clarity declined by 3.7 feet, marking the 10th lowest clarity on record. Longer-term data trends reveal a significant decline since 1968, when clarity was measured at 102.4 feet.
