Chukwuma Okorafor, a 27-year-old former New England Patriots offensive tackle, has signed with the New York Jets after not securing a permanent position with the Patriots. Initially brought on a one-year, $4 million contract, Okorafor aimed to compete for the starting left tackle role, but was sidelined early in the season. After being benched in the opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, he spent most of the year on the exempt list before his February release. He is now joining the Jets, a division rival of the Patriots.
Okorafor, 27, joined the Patriots on a one-year, $4 million free agency pact last offseason. The initial hope was that the former Pittsburgh Steelers third-round draft pick would compete for the starting left tackle job, but the plan failed to fully materialize.
While he did start the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, Okorafor was benched in favor of Vederian Lowe after just 12 snaps.
He eventually was released by New England in February. Now, he has found a new team, joining the Patriots' division rivals in New York.
