On Wednesday evening, human remains were discovered inside a suitcase floating in the East River near Governor's Island. The alert was raised by a passing vessel, leading to a quick response from the NYPD Harbor Unit around 5:30 p.m. Upon opening the suitcase, police made a disturbing discovery before retrieving the bag to shore for further investigation. Emergency medical services and the medical examiner's office were summoned to Pier 16 as the investigation began, though the duration the suitcase had been adrift remains unknown, with details of the case still emerging.
