Safe Streets Top Wish List for Mayor From Transit Advocates
"Daylighting, speed limit reductions, more bike lanes, and fast and free buses were among the recommendations from Transportation Alternatives."
"The extensive report released Thursday, dubbed " The Road to Affordability: A Streets and Transportation Agenda for the Next Mayor of NYC," appears to give Mamdani an outline of a transportation to-do list that includes what to focus on during his first 100 days in office, as well as long-term goals."
"The agenda includes several controversial traffic safety initiatives, including some that have sharply divided public opinion among New Yorkers in recent years. These include making daylighting universal, which pits street safety against parking availability; building more bike lane networks; lowering speed limits; and extending Summer Streets to every Sunday."
An advocacy group released a multi-page transportation agenda titled "The Road to Affordability: A Streets and Transportation Agenda for the Next Mayor of NYC" outlining more than 80 ideas favoring public transit over private cars. Recommendations include daylighting, expanded bike lane networks, reduced speed limits, extending Summer Streets to Sundays, fast and free buses, and prioritizing bus speeds and pedestrian safety. The agenda proposes actions for the first 100 days and long-term goals. The group asserts these measures will help reach Vision Zero, speed up buses, create open public spaces, and address narrow sidewalks, obstructed intersections, and speeding vehicles.
